Who are we?
We are SR&ED research tax credit technical specialists. Since 1996, we have been quietly helping a growing group of technology-based companies obtain R&D tax refunds and organize their R&D work. Our client companies operate in diverse fields and include manufacturers, inventors, software developers and more. Forging comfortable, long-term business relationships with our clients, our approach is scientific but simple, rigorous but relaxed, accurate but advocating, strategic but sensible. As part of our work, we take much vicarious pleasure from our clients’ successes!
What do we do?
The Scientific Research and Experimental Development tax credit (or SR&ED - see the CRA's website for more information) has been in existence in one form or another since 1948. It is designed to assist companies by encouraging them in their ongoing research and development. Applying for SR&ED tax credits requires both a technical and financial submission; the former to explain activities that are eligible under the SR&ED program, and the latter to explain the costs incurred as a result of the activities described in the technical report.
A company's technical staff is naturally familiar with the technologies, processes and products developed, but it is quite likely that they do not have the SR&ED-specific financial experience to associate all eligible costs with the developmental activities. Likewise, a company's financial staff may have an excellent grasp of a company's finances, but do not necessarily have the SR&ED-specific technical experience required to complete a technical report.
N.J. Robbins Consultants SR&ED practitioners are experts in the SR&ED tax credit program. Working with a client from a “third-person perspective”, we identify and describe all eligible SR&ED activities within a client company in a comprehensive technical report, ready for submission to the CRA. We are not accountants, nor do we wish to compete with our clients' accountants. In addition to the technical report, we provide a client company's financial staff with all associated costs in a format suitable for inclusion into the appropriate federal and provincial tax forms.
We're in for the long haul.
Although our clients benefit greatly from our “third person perspective” in identifying and describing SR&ED-eligible activities, we tend to be anything but outsiders to our clients. Indeed, we are not simply available at tax time for the preparation of a claim; we pride ourselves in working with our clients year-'round, providing insight and assistance in any capacity that we are able. It is quite common for us to become part of a client company's “development team”.
